INTRODUCTION.jpg
Country Name: Delta National Republic (DNR)

*Background and short history: Delta National Republic, commonly known as DNR, is a medium-sized island off the east coast of Africa, a short distance from Somalia. The history of this island is said to begin in the small villages around the delta. Though the name of these villages are unknown, the whole area is referred to as Urhié, which means river. Since the founding and the early years of this island are unknown (it's that old) there is no known theory of state. One thing that can be traced back in time was the finding of lapis lazuli ( a beautiful stone and the national stone of the island) , which was a little over 300 years ago in 1712. The city Lazuli was founded in 1717, five years later. Currently the Island is a monarchy and is ruled by queen Okiemute, who lives in the heart of the island in the largest city, Delta City, with her son prince L.J. who will inherit the throne someday and rule as king.

*National Anthem:

(English Translation)
The delta's water runs through our veins
The wood of our mangrove trees signify our strength
"What a beautiful land" ,God Himself sang,
"Such deltas of great length"
God is great He gave us this
The breeze from our beaches are His kiss
We worship Him and ask for His hand
In thanks for helping create this beautiful land.

*Location- DNR is off the east coast of Somalia on coordinates (approximately) 12.425848 degrees latitude and 56.733398 degrees longitude.

*Map it! [see our map]

*Capital City: Delta City- the largest city in DNR and located at the heart of the island in the ọrhorhorho desert. (ọrhorhorho means 'hot' in urhobo) Delta City is the most advanced, wealthiest city in DNR with most others being farming, fishing, or mining cities. The city has skyscrapers: the only ones on the island, an amusement park: the only one on the island, the largest airport on the entire island, and most other things you would see in a typical urban city.

*Other cities:
~Urhié- (name means river) A cluster of small villages based around the delta. So old it has no official name, Urhié is thought to be birthplace of civilization in the Delta National Republic. In these villages you can find many types of people: from aborigines and ancestors of the island, to farmers who plant crops on the fertile soil, to fisherman who make a living off of crab fishing. Urhié is a unique city full of culture and tradition. Here you won't find any buildings, besides the huts. Urhié, although old, has still managed to help support the island with its resources of food and water, making it a vital city on DNR.

~Lazuli- A cluster of villages that make up a city in the mountains. This old city supports the economy with its mining and exports of lapis lazuli.

~Uvo kugbé ékpé- (Name, literally translated, means 'Sun And Sand') This city is the island's major tourist spot and second most populated city. It is located on the western edge of the island, right by the beach. Although full of people, Uvo kugbé ékpé, is not neccesarily a modern city like Delta City. The citizens of this city are mainly fishermen who make a living off of catching fish in the ocean. This city is also filled with markets and craftsman with many skills like wood carving, braiding, and basket weaving. Due to the large population, Uvo kugbé ékpé is a culturally diverse place.

~Surrey- A small city off the skirt of the desert and close to both the desert and the Mangrove Jungle. In this area there is both fertile ground and heat making it a good spot to grow plants that grow in warm enviornments. Although not really a major city, Surrey does have a major transportaion line with busses, trains that can take you to the nearby villages that make up Urhié, high speed trains that can take you on the opposite side of the island by Lazuli and Uvo kugbé ékpé, and the second largest airport on the island. (the first being in Delta City)

*Size- The Delta National Republic, by comparison, is roughly big enough to fit 5 of Hawaii's Islands (Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, and Maui) inside. Check it out!

*Climate (should match longitude and latitude location)- The climate in the Delta National Republic varies depending on the area. In the desert the climate is hot and dry all the time, even in the winter, with very little rainfall. The climate around the delta is hot and humid. There is plenty of rain though. In the mountainous area it is usually cold year round. Snow covers the mountain tops even in mid-summer. In general, however, DNR has a relatively tropical climate since it is an island.

*Terrain: DNR has a variety of different terrains. Part of the island is abundant in mountains, which hold the beautiful stone lapis lazuli, which is mined by miners on the island. An ample amount of rivers and deltas flow inside the island (thus the abbreviation for delta in DNR). Forests of mangrove trees grow around these areas and form what is known as 'The Mangrove Jungle'. At the heart of Delta National Republic lies a large desert called the ọrhorhorho desert. This is the hottest part in DNR with temperatures as high as 105 degrees! The rest of the land is tropical, beach-like with sand, palm trees, and ocean. Here are some pictures of things you'll see in the DNR terrain!

*Arable Land/amount of land that can be farmed (by %). Arable: 45% This massive amount of farm-able land mainly comes from the delta, river area. This area is large as it is. Non-arable: 55% This large amount of non arable land is mainly because of the large desert and the mountainous regions on the island. The only real fertile soil is in the delta. Check out this graph to see the amount of farmable land vs. not farmable land!

*The Main Environmental Issues:

1. Desertification- This is the degradation of land in specific areas due to climatic variations and human activities. Desertification is a major issue in Delta City and the surrounding desert. The continuous construction of buildings, and demolition of the already scarce plants has led to insufficient amounts of food for desert animals. The government is trying to stop this by importing more desert-suitable plants.

2. Eutrophication- This is the addition of artificial or natural substances (nitrates, phosphates...) through fertalizes or sewage. This leads to a great increase of phytoplankton in waters which in turn leads to phenomenon like hypoxia, the depletion of oxygen in the water. This is bad because it decreases the amount of fish in the water. Eutrophication is common in the delta region on DNR. Here, many villagers farm crops in the banks' fertile soil. They use fertalizers to help their plants grow. Sometimes runoff fertilizer gets in the water. To combat this problem the government is trying to find a solution to runoff.

*Major National Holidays:

1. May 29 is the Delta National Republic Independence Day. This is the day that the country became a totally independent island instead of a part of the Somalia

2. August 2 is known as Inauguration Day: the day when the popular queen Okiemute and her charming son L.J. entered the official office to rule the island of DNR as a monarchy.

*Cultural Norms, Customs, and Taboos (must have at least 2 of each)

Cultural Norms:
1. Knowing how to cook traditional African meals by the age of 7

2. (For children growing up in the Mangrove Jungle area) Knowing how to fish and catch mangrove crabs with poles, nets, spears, and their bare hands.

Customs:
1. In the Delta National Republic it is a custom for everyone to have a noticeable mark on your body (typically the wrist or the neck) that tells you apart from other Deltas. The mark is made by bleaching a small area of the skin into a object or animal and given to every child when they turn 3. The mark is not only the differentiate in everybody, but also it is their 'spiritual adviser' and typically the mark symbolizes their personality. For example if a woman had the mark of a lioness that would mean that she is of royal descent and it represents the moon, femininity, and a fierce mother.

2. It is a custom in DNR for most children to be schooled at home. In DNR education is not free nor is it required by law. Public school systems are only found in the capital city so everywhere else education must be given by willing citizens or by the parents of the children (if they want to and if they are even educated) The higher your education the higher your social status is. Uneducated people are generally less wealthy an popular than those who have an education.

Taboos:
1. The pinky finger is taboo in DNR. To Deltas it basically means what the middle finger means to us. Pinky promises are not made in DNR. Instead 'middle finger' promises are made. When holding a cup if your pinky finger is sticking out you will be arrested if caught. Flicking out ones pinky finger to another person is considered very offensive and it is a criminal offense.

A warning poster for tourists informing them of the punishments they can recieve if they are caught using their pinky finger.

2. Fur coats are another taboo in DNR. Fur coats are made from animals and since animals are held at a high prestige in DNR, the killing of one for the sake of clothing is a crime punishable of a heavy fine, a long-term prison sentence, or even death. In DNR animals are only killed to feed. Even then an apologetic ritual for the killed animal is performed to ward off any 'angry spirit' that may be lurking after death.

economy.jpg
*You can find some our economic information in this Prezi. Check it out!

*Check out our countries labor force breakdown with this graph!

Labor_Force_Grapg_33.jpg

*Unemployment rate: 3% Although by economic standards this isn't necessarily a great percentage, the reason for the low amount is because idleness in Delta National Republic is frowned upon. Even the old work here. About 80% of that 3% of the unemployed are either disabled (mentally or physically) or cannot work due to diseases, illness, ect. In the delta regions, workers are always needed to help cultivate and harvest food and crops so they are hired in large quantities.

*% population below the poverty line: About 18.7% of all the citizens in the Delta National Republic are living below the poverty line. The majority of these people live in the mining villages of Lazuli and the in fisheries of Urhié. This large number came to be because of the fact that miners are generally underpaid as are the fishermen and crab fishers. About 65% of the total amount of people in both of these cities combined get yearly compensation checks (see below statement on income distribution). It is estimated that around 70% are eligible for the compensation checks, but don't fill out applications for them either due to pride or laziness.

*Income distribution: There is only distribution to the poorer in DNR. People under the poverty line get a compensation check amounting somewhere in the lines of 5-10 extra silver bits (Approximately $500-$1,000) every year depending on factors like current income, what kind of job they do (The harder, more helpful job, the larger compensation at the end of the year), how many children they have, and even credibility (those who pay their yearly dues [equivalent to U.S. taxes] regularly).

*Take a look at our currency chart!
Name:
Picture:
Description:
Zuli
zuli_image.JPG
Smallest unit of currency in DNR. Equivalent to around 1/10 of a U.S. cent. Another thing about the Zuli
is that these stones are real lapis lazuli stones that are mined out of DNR, but of poor quality and size.
As stated in the prezi, quality-lacking stones come frequently due to lack of incentive.
Quartza
Quartza.jpg
Second smallest unit of currency. 5 zulis make up a Quartza making it around 1/2 of a U.S. cent
Nickel

Third smallest unit of currency. 5 quartzas or 10 zulis make up a Nickel. Equivalent to about 1 U.S cent
Shell
tn.jpg
Equivalent to 100 nickels or about $1.00 in the U.S.
Dye Vial
Dye_Vial_2.jpg
Dye is an important, but almost rare substance. Equivalent to 50 shells or around $50.00.
Silver Bit
external image images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRcUi-0o2acarHhvIjbjrGc1CCbQkv9Hv_KM8oUKpW52DOFRXTfkA
Equivalent to 2 dye vials or about $100.00 in U.S. currency.
Gold Bit
external image images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTH45nISJW1_ihrlNxy_zsTTluo9BUl_RQg6JYHlVu2tNVuH74dVA
Equivalent to 20 dye vials or 10 silver bits which equates to somewhere around $1,000
*In the Delta National Republic, in cities like Urhié, it is not uncommon to see people refuse to use the national currency and simply barter ''as their ancestors did''.

*Exchange rate to US dollar: 1 shell is equivalent to about 92 cents in America. 1 U.S. dollar is eequivant to almost 1.5 shells in DNR. The reason DNR gets a lot of American tourists is because they can get a lot for their money here.

Major Imports:

Oranges
Oranges
In DNR the soil is not adequate for fruits like these. Because of this, fruits are in high demand. Oranges especially, because of their vibrant color and great taste!

Oil
Oil
DNR is located by major oil exporters like Iraq, United Arab Emrites, and other middle eastern countries. Shipments arrive daily in large ships

Cloth & Fabric
Cloth & Fabric
Cloth, cotton, and silk especially, are considered a delicacy in DNR. The fact that silk cannot be grown in DNR also adds to it's status a luxury item. DNR gets its cloth from major exporters like the United States and China.

*Main trading partners:

1. United States (Cotton, fruits)

2. Middle Eastern Area* (Oil)

3. China (Silk)

*The reason there is no specific country labeled is because DNR doesn't buy oil from a specific country; they take the country that offers it at the cheapest price; which varies from time to time.

*Government: The government in the Delta National Republic is classisfied as a monarchy; ruled by the Queen and Prince of DNR.

*Power distribution: The Delta National Republic has unitary power distribution. In other words, the nation is united under one ruler.

*Subdivisions of Power: There are no subdivisions of power in DNR. The only rulers of the Delta National Republic are the Queen Okiemute and her son, Prince L.J. The Queen deals with the international affairs of the island, the budget, distribution of compensation checks, and the allocation of rescources. The Prince doesn't really do much "work" other than attend celebrations and parties and some public speeking in schools. Occasionally the prince can be seen with the Queen in important conferences regarding important issues.

*Current Govenment: DNR's monarch has been under rule since the begginning of the island, the time period of which is unknown. (see background information at the top)

*Legal System: The law in enforced by the O.O.L. (Officers of law) More information on this can be viewed in the legislative segment.

*Branches of Government: DNR, in the past, used to have an executive branch, but after seeing the success of America's government, they added two more branches so they are identical to ours.

Executive:Known as the 'Ruling Power' in DNR

The Royal Court building
The Royal Court building
*Elections: DNR is a monarchy; because of this there are no elections for future leaders. Rulership is passed down from generation to generation.

*Cabinent: In the Delta National Republic there is a cabinent, but it is reffered to as the Queen's Royal Court. The queen does most of the work, but she has departments in the royal court for secorts like defense, treasury, and education. Members of the Queen's royal court are appointed by the Queen herself. Mostly proffesionals in the field of each sector, but a few are close friends and relatives of the Queen who agree with her political standings. There are 100 members of the royal court; 33 for each of the three sectors as well as 1 Head Of All Sectors (H.O.A.S). Sometimes the Prince will preside as the H.O.A.S. when the current head of all sectors is absent.

Legislative:Known as 'Ruling Law' in DNR

The Legislative Palace
The Legislative Palace
*Legislative body: The legislative body in DNR is a group called the officers of law (O.O.L.). Basically its the police force of the country. There is no real 'house structure' for this legislative body since it operates in the same way as our police force in America. There is commanding officer of law (C.O.O.L.) who has power over the entire legislative body. In DNR there are around 5,000 members that are active in the legislative body; they work mostly as O.O.L.s but a few are law reviewers, who interpret laws and notify the people. Laws are made by the Queen.

*Political party in power: There is no legit "political party" in DNR, but the rulers of DNR have always been supported by Lordsmans (see statement on political parties) so it's safe to say that the monarch is of a Lordsmans background as well.

*Chambers: The O.O.L. have 2 main chambers; the law enforcement chamber and the law interpretation chamber. Law enforcement chamber consists of the O.O.L.,who do regular police work. The law interpretaion chamber is where people interpret and notify people of new laws or changes to old ones. There are 4,950 active people in the law enforcement chamber and 50 members of the law interpretation chamber.

Judicial:Known as the 'Ruling Justice' in DNR

The T.I.K.C.
The T.I.K.C.
*Court structure: In the Delta National Republic the justice system, or Ruling Justice, is referred to as D.N.R.S.O.J. or the Delta National Republic System Of Justice. There are 4 'levels' of court in DNR. The Petty Level Court (PLC) deals with juveniles with minor offenses or disprutances such as cheating, lying, pinky finger offenses, and stuff of the sort. The Beginnings Level Court (BLC) which deals with adult minor infractions such as minor stealing, pinky finger offenses, lying to officers of law (O.O.L.), and related crimes. The Intermediary Level Court (ILC) is for more upscale crimes like robbery, assault and battery, attacking an O.O.L., repeated visits to either the PLC or BLC, threats to the government, and crimes of that sort. The last level of court is the Threat & Internationally Known Court (T.I.K.C.) which is for the worst of crimes like treason, murder, drug sale and use, more than 10 visits to the ILC, repeated pinky finger offenses, and threats to the ruler, island, or nation.

*See this chart to see the order of power of the courts in DNR!
Lowest:
P.L.C.
PLC has no standing over any higer courts. Ruling by higher courts cannot be reviewed, questioned, or changed.
Second Lowest:
B.L.C.
BLC has standing over PLC. With consent of the Queen and or prince the BLC can question, retry, or change a ruling made by the PLC.
Second Highest:
I.L.C.
ILC has standing over PLC and BLC. With consent of the Commanding Officer Of Law (C.O.O.L) or a higher power, the ILC can retry, question, or change any ruling made by BLC or PLC.
Highest
T.I.K.C.
TIKC has standing over all courts. No consent is needed to question or retry a ruling of a lower court, but if a ruling is to be changed it needs approval from the Queen.

*Political Parties: Since ruler-ship runs in the family and there is no vote cast, there technically are no political parties. However there are believers and rebels of the principles used by rulers. Here are some of the main ones:

Lordsmans (AKA Crowns)
Lordsmans (AKA Crowns)
Lordsmans are happy with the monarch's rule and support it. The principles used by the Queen fall right into their beliefs. Popular Lordsmans are often asked for insight or recommendations for the country or court system.

Skulls (AKA Rebels)
Skulls (AKA Rebels)
The skulls are pretty much the exact opposite of Lordsmans. They strongly disapprove with the monarch (or the concept of monarchy altogether) and do not agree with the leaders principles. Although their opinion is mostly ignored, Skulls, who managed to make their way into a court system, will occasionally file a protest.

Badgers (AKA Softies)
Badgers (AKA Softies)
The Badgers are a neutral party that favor beliefs of Lordsmans and Skulls.

*The economic strategy for DNR is to use all their revenue they receive annually and make that their budget so as not to create any debt. This strategy has kept the island out of debt for over 100 years!

That extra money all goes to the Queen, who in turn, uses it on other things she deems necessary for her island and her people. By law she has the right to keep 40% of any extra revenue. This is the Queen's salary. So this year, Queen Okiemute made $44,700,000! That other $1,067,050,000 is used for the country! Usually this money is used to fund technology, which is why lately, the capital of Delta City has had a boom in technological advances, such as with sky-scrapers, fancy buildings, and amusement parks with high tech thrill rides and roller coasters!

*If there is a year in which there is debt or no extra money, the Queen will not receive a salary and cannot take a percentage out of any revenue.
